Chapter 2 Theory into Practice: Tip Model Scenario # 1Phase 1 Reflecting on Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Jennifer McBeath Sharon Toner Veronica Totton-Graham Jane Wilson

Scenario #1 Jim, English teacher at Maple High School, decided it was time to start integrating technology into his teaching. 15 years experience with established lessons Had been resistant to change Analyzed his TPACK and discovered strength in content knowledge but weakness in technological and pedagogical knowledge

1.1If you were Jim, how would you respond to your TPACK analysis? TPACK is now called Tech-PACK. Tech-PACK is a framework to understand and describe the kinds of knowledge needed to teach using technology. To complete the Tech-PACK assessment, teachers need to reflect on the following questions: What is my content knowledge? (CK) What is my knowledge of pedagogy? (PK) What is my knowledge of technology? (TK)

Tech Pack TechnologyPedagogy Content Knowledge

Technology Knowledge: This is when teachers are keeping up to date with the latest technologies and determining which tool is best to use when teaching any content area. This requires the need for teachers to receive professional development, in-service and time to learn how to use the new technologies and be open to change. Slide 4

Pedagogy Knowledge: Teachers find ways and techniques that are used to best teach the content and skill area. Teachers adapt to the needs of their students. (UDL) Teachers can research online, consult with colleagues, use curriculum guides and educational magazines or journals. Slide 4

Content Knowledge: Content knowledge of your curriculum is essential. Teachers must be up-to-date and current. Teachers may need to read up on new or updated curriculum guides, research, consult with mentors.

To answer the question: Jim should respond to his Tech-PACK analysis by researching ways of strengthening his pedagogical and technology knowledge. He should find out what technologies are available to use for teaching language arts and consult with colleagues, the school’s technology mentor and begin to research how he could use these technologies. He could also watch tutorials online, read PDF’s and blogs.

To strengthen Jim’s pedagogy, he should research what are today’s best practices. This can be done easily with Google, WikiHow, Youtube, online teaching magazines, journals and blogs. * Jim needs to be critical of sources when going through this process. **This most important component for Jim is to be open minded, ready for change and not let the technology intimidate him.

1.2How might you use this information to influence your future lesson planning? Take time to do your own Tech-PACK assessment. Focus on your teaching assignment for the school year. Reflect on these three questions: 1.How comfortable am I with the content? Are there areas I need to brush up? 2.Do I know how best to engage the students I will have? 3.Can I access technology that will help students learn more effectively? If you have weak areas, where will you find resources to get stronger?1
