Alternate-Form Reliability Quintin Molina AED 615 – October 23, 2006
2
Alternate Form Reliability The degree to which two or more versions of the same test correlate with one another. Process – a given function is tested more than once over time and it is important to have more than one version of a given instrument and to show that these different versions are reasonably equivalent. (www.nationalmssociety.org/MUCS_glossary1.asp)
3
Example of Alternate-Form Reliability If memory is tested through the learning of a list of words, follow-up testing should use a different list of words of equivalent difficulty. If the same list of words were used on the second testing, scores would be inflated due to the subject’s prior knowledge of the words. (www.nationalmssociety.org/MUCS_glossary1.asp)
4
AFR - Value to Survey Research The correlation of scores on pairs of alternate forms for the same examinees provides another measure of consistency or reliability. www.ericdigests.org/2002-2/reliability.htm
5
Qualitative Usefulness Heavily favored in the qualitative based studies due to the fact that it lends itself neatly to the measure of consistency.
