Terrestrial Ecosystems Monitoring Sites (TEMS) Who, what, where International on-line directory of monitoring sites and networks carrying out long-term terrestrial ecosystem monitoring
2
Contents Who: – 2040 sites – 1160 contacts – 40 networks What: 120 measured variables Where: 130 countries Information
3
Functions Terrestrial ecosystems Active data gathering Extent of coverage International interest Long-term Admission criteria
4
Site detailed information
5
Majority of networks and sites concerned by land cover and more specifically: – FluxNet: Integrating Worldwide CO2 Flux Measurements – FAO-FRA: Forest Resources Assessment, a pan- tropical Remote sensing survey – ILTER: International Long-Term Ecological Research – GLCTS: Global Land Cover Test Sites Land cover monitoring network
6
Existing and proposed in situ validation projects Ongoing validation by BIGFOOT of MODIS GPP/NPP datasets CEOS initiative for global land cover validation methodologies GOFC-GOLD meeting for GLOBCOVER in situ validation Ongoing international assessments such as FAO FRA, a pan-tropical Remote sensing survey
7
Land cover monitoring map
9
Remote sensing validation with in situ data TEMS can provide contact points for each site and network involved in land cover in situ observations, such as FLUXNET or ILTER already involved in the GTOS Net Ecosystem Productivity demonstration project (GTOS-NEP)
10
Validation effort of MODIS products at tower flux sites Ex situ In situ Provide as-best-as-possible estimates of large- scale GPP, NPP, NEP by synthesizing data from – tower flux networks – remote sensing – meteo networks – BGC models Indicate where lack of information caused greatest uncertainty
