Body Cavities Body Cavities: areas within the body containing internal organs

2 Main Body Cavities The two main body cavities are: ◦ Dorsal Body Cavity ◦ Ventral Body Cavity

Main Body Cavities Dorsal Body Cavity: sub divided into ◦ Cranial Cavity: housing the brain ◦ Spinal Cavity: housing the spinal chord

Main Body Cavities Ventral Body Cavity: sub-divided into ◦ Thoracic Cavity ◦ Abdominopelvic Cavity

Ventral Body Cavity ◦ Thoracic Cavity: surrounded by ribs and muscles of the chest and is sub-divided into Left Pleural Cavity: left lung Right Pleural Cavity: right lung Pericardial Cavity: houses the heart

Ventral Body Cavity Abdominopelvic Cavity/Peritoneal Cavity: separated from the thoracic cavity by the diaphragm muscle. Two subdivisions: ◦ Abdominal Subdivision: stomach, intestines, spleen, and liver ◦ Pelvic Subdivision: bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum

Thoracic Diaphragm Diaphragm: a sheet of internal skeletal muscle that separates the Thoracic cavity from the abdominal pelvic cavity and aids in inhaling.
