The Significance of Metals, Metalloids, and Non Metals
Elements might seem unimportant to some but, every single one of them has improved and helped maintain human, animal, and plant life. Think About It?... Without the durability and electrical advantages of elements like copper, lead, and iron, how could we use various types of power? Without the basic composition of carbon compounds, how would elements sustain balance? Without oxygen, how would we breath?

So What About Metals? 75% of the periodic table are elements that are categorized as metals Properties of Metal Metals are Lustrous (shiny, gleaming) , malleable/ductile (metals such as gold and lead) and are very vulnerable or capable of being hammered, pressed thin, or pounded. They are also good conductors of heat and electricity, solids at room temperature, and highly reactive. Uses of Metals Metals have various uses for automotive, technological, and personal purposes. Examples: Lead is sometimes used for radiation shielding. Copper is used for electrical products and housing appliances, like ventilation and plumbing. Cobalt is used to fabricate aircraft engines and gas turbines. Nickel is used to provide durability for products, such as alloys.

So What About Metalloids?
Metalloids are the type of metals that contain properties of nonmetals and metals. Properties of Metalloids Metalloids are good semiconductors of heat and electricity, solids, shiny, lustrous, and ductile. *Some of these properties depend on the element Metalloids Boron Silicon Germanium Arsenic Antimony Tellurium Polonium

Uses of Metalloids Metalloids have various uses that are similar to metals and nonmetals. Examples: Polonium is used to remove electrical static. Arsenic is used for insecticides, weed killers, poisons (military and rodent uses), and ammunition.

So What About Nonmetals?
Nonmetals are elements that are not metals and have no properties of metals. Properties of Nonmetals Nonmetals are gaseous, brittle (Solid nonmetals), poor conductors of heat and electricity, high ionization energies and electronegativities. Nonmetals Argon, Astatine, Bromine, Carbon, Chlorine, Fluorine, Helium, Hydrogen, Iodine, Krypton, Neon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorus, Radon, Selenium, Sulfur and Xenon

Uses of Nonmetals Nonmetals have a wide variety of uses. Examples:
Phosphorus is used in fertilizers and pesticides an It is also an essential element for the human body’s skeleton. Oxygen is the one of the most significant gases for human survival (breathing) and plant life (process of photosynthesis). Neon is mostly used for housing (fluorescent lamps) and automobile lighting.
