PSB/PS PS During LS1 the hardware in the Central Building was demolished and reconstructed. Reprogramming the all PPM cycles (after the change of 10 MHz cavity grouping) was transparent to CCC. New one-turn-delay feedback First pure batch compression in PS (28.11) Controlled longitudinal emittance blow-up in PSB PSB Real controlled blow-up for high-intensity beams (low- intensity highlight Jan 2013). 13 harmonic numbers
4
SPS: during LS1 Faraday Cage Controls Upgrade: - specifications, testing, debugging and reverse engineering of all new hardware and software related to multiple modules of type VTU, RF Phase Shifter, Injection Pulse Generator, CVORGs, B-Train Counter, Frequency Program DSP, Frequency Program DDS, and RFFG - LSA debugging with OP and CO SPS and LHC RF Beam Observation - APWL prototype feed-through and spare APWL09 - RF PU movements & isolation repair in LSS3 - BQM support AWAKE - Synchronisation - Fibre-optic link: noise and phase drift measurements
5
SPS: with beams 8 bunches + 4 empty No e-cloud! High intensity 25 ns beam Inj. 1.9x10 11 /bunch Losses due to e-cloud… Doublets: strong e-cloud effect → good for LHC scrubbing Ar ions FT beam 4620 bunches 4 bunches BSMS beam (48b): less e-cloud Very long ramp… ɛ =1.8 μm LHC: 1.6x10 11 /doublet
6
SPS: momentum slip stacking, bunch splitting and rotation… 7 MV adiabatic: 1.55ns & step: 1.3 ns Momentum slip stacking at 270 GeV (simulations) to increase number of bunches (luminosity) in LHC → LIU baseline for LHC ions LHC beam rotation @ 450 GeV measurements Bunch rotation also may needed for doublets and HL-LHC beams
7
New simulation code BLonD is a new Beam Longitudinal Dynamics simulation code. Features: Single and multi-bunch (the latter currently being developed) Acceleration, multiple RF systems, multiple RF stations Collective effects in frequency and time domain Low-level RF options (phase noise, phase loop, feedbacks...) Monitoring, plotting, data analysis Documentation blond.web.cern.ch Applications Publications User's guide Download Installation guide User installation guide LXPLUS/LXBATCH installation guide Code dependencies Developers: T. Argyropoulos, J. Esteban Muller,Developers A. Lasheen, D. Quartullo, H. Timko (FB)

Longitudinal instabilities in the SPS: measurements and simulations Good agreement between measurements and simulations using the new SPS impedance model which includes all vacuum flanges Single bunch Bunch lengthening at 450 GeV (200 MHz + 800 MHz RF systems) Synchrotron frequency shift with intensity for various bunch lengths at 26 GeV/c
9
Longitudinal impedance of the SPS: large contribution from vacuum flanges enamelled BPH-Q F → 39 + 62 enamelled QF–MBA → 97 non-enamelled QF–QF → 26 enamelled BPV – QD → 90 enamelled BPV-QD → 90enamelled BPV–QD → 90 For LHC beam stability their shielding or new low impedance design needed!
10
UA9 tank impedance: all-mode coupler (AMC) Q = 142 45 deg Good results from measurements with AMC in different configurations 45 deg Q = 171 Q = 750 Q = 27 Q = 2500 Q = 105 Q = 82 Q = 44

2014 Prizes of the EPS Accelerator Group Awards session at IPAC 2014. Left to right: J. E. Muller, C. Biscari, A. Marinelli, M. Eriksson, T. Shintake A prize for a student registered for a PhD or diploma in accelerator physics or engineering was awarded to Juan Esteban Muller (CERN/BE/RF/BR & EPFL) for the work “High-accuracy diagnostic tool for electron cloud observation in the LHC based on synchronous phase measurements“ (with P. Baudrenghien, T. Mastoridis, E. Shaposhnikova, D. Valuch) → operational tool in CCC from 2015

LHC crab cavities ● 3 world record cavities were down selected to 2 in 2014 ● They were all retested in SM18
14
Harmonic RF system in LHC 800 MHz: ● Useful for longitudinal beam stability in Bunch Shortening Mode for Hi-Lumi beams in LHC → solid RF design available for prototyping! ● Another option under study: 200 MHz SC RF
