6 Look at your TAKS formula chart. What is the velocity of a wave? Velocity = Frequency times the Wavelength v = f x  The velocity (v) of waves are usually measured in meter/second  Wavelengths ( ) are usually measured in meters (The lambda symbol,, represents wavelength)  Frequency (f) of waves are measured in Hertz 6

7 Reflection When a wave strikes a surface or boundary and bounces back.

8 Reflection Reflection (buzz word): mirror, surface, rebound, bounce, return, (antonym-absorb)

9 Reflection of light Reflection only produces an image if the surface producing the reflection of light is perfectly smooth. Absorption is opposite of reflection!

11 Light Color vs Pigment Color Primary colors of light are red, blue and green Combined they make white light. Primary pigments are magenta, cyan, and yellow. Combined they make a material black.

12 Light Spectrum Absorption of Chlorophyll ( order of colors in spectrum -“roy g biv” )

13 Seeing color The color you see is the light that is reflected from the object. Other wavelengths are absorbed.

14 Refraction The bending of light waves when they travel from one medium to another (i.e. from air to water). During this process, the angle of reflection appears to be increase.

17 Diffraction The bending of a wave around a barrier or emerging through an opening. The smaller the opening the more the waves bend.

20 Resonance An effect in which the vibration of one object causes the vibration of another object at a natural frequency (a frequency in which they vibrate).

21 Resonance (buzz words): natural frequency, harmonic vibration, sound, tuning fork, plucking/striking, string instruments (piano, guitar)

23 Waves Interference (buzz words): combine, constructive, destructive, phase, beats

24 Polarization The process of transforming unpolarized light (light traveling in all directions) into polarized light (light waves traveling in one direction). This process is accomplished by using a polarizing filter.
