PROTOCOL As we read excerpts from Romeo and Juliet, we will use a 30-30-30 instructional routine. – 30 min. – Unit Intro Discussion Groups (Collaborative Group) Sustained Silent Reading Accompanied by Annotation of Text and 3-2-1 (Independent) – 30 min. – Literary Terms (Collaborative Group) – 30 min. – Prologue to Romeo and Juliet with Open Response Question (Whole Group to Independent Response) Avoid requesting to leave the room. Expect to share aloud, explain, and defend. On task, focused behavior is the expectation.

3. DISCUSSION GROUPS 10 min. Discussion Questions: What type spouse does your parents want for you? Are these expectations impacted by heritage or culture? Do their expectations differ from your own and do they have the right to impose these expectations on you? Response Format: As you support your stance, use the CER format. – C = claim – E = evidence (support) – R = reasoning (how evidence supports your claim) *When your group shares with the class, be prepared to explain and defend your statements.

4. Sustained Silent Reading 15 min. Instructions: Read the assigned text. As you read, annotate the text by creating and completing the annotation chart on your own paper. Record the definition, a well known example, a clarifying statement (if necessary), and a pictorial memory cue. Share the work by assigning each group member a term. Be prepared to share aloud.
