CANADA The impact of the physical and Geographic features

1.How does Canada’s location make it easier to trade with other countries? ■Canada has access to two major oceans, the Atlantic and Pacific.

2.Describe where most people live in Canada. Why? ■Most Canadians live in southern Canada near the U.S. border because of the warmer climate and proximity to manufacturing and trade centers.

3.List the largest cities. What do they all have in common? ■The largest cities are Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Hamilton, Montreal, Quebec, Toronto, and Halifax. All of these cities are located near the U.S. and a major body of water.

4.Why do you suppose so many Canadian cities are located near the St. Lawrence River? ■Many cities are located near the St. Lawrence river because the river provides easy access to the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean, which makes trade easier with other countries.

5.How does Canada’s land use compare to that of the United States? Be specific. ■The U.S. has more manufacturing and trade centers and Canada has a lot more forestland.

6.What do you think is meant by the term “arable?” ■The term “arable” refers to land that is good for farming.

7.List the seven climate types in Canada 1.Steppe (semi-arid) 2.Marine 3.Hot summer continental 4.Cool summer continental 5.Subarctic 6.Tundra 7.Highland

8.Which climate type is the most predominant in Canada? ■Subarctic ■Subarctic climate is usually found in the interior (not coastal) of high latitude continents usually between 50 and 70 degrees latitude. Since there are no large continents in high latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, Subarctic climate is only found in the Northern Hemisphere. Subarctic climate has 2 seasons. The winter is much longer and extremely cold, with the cool to mild summer lasting only 2-3 months. The summer is sometimes only 1 month long.

9. How does the cool summer climate in the southeastern portion of Canada impact its economy? (think about how the climate affects factors of production) ■The cool summer climate is suitable for farming, which allows Canada to grow crops (natural resources) for their own country as well as to trade with other countries. The warmer climate also attracts more people, which means more human resources for producing goods and services.

10.How does Canada benefit from the St. Lawrence River? ■Canada benefits from the St. Lawrence River because it makes trade easier between the U.S. and other countries.

11.Describe the location of the region most affected by acid rain in Canada ■The region most affected by acid rain is located in the southern and southeastern portion of Canada

12. Why do you think this region is the most affected? (look back to the population and land use maps to help you) ■This region is the most affected because of its proximity to manufacturing and trade centers which contain coal-burning factories and emissions from automobiles.
