Addition with Regrouping By: Mrs. Whitener

36 +28 How would you solve this problem?

36 +28 Here are some different ways I solved it. 14 5 The problem is, is that I have three different answers

36 +28 14 5 The problem is, is that I have three different answers I know this isn’t right because I can’t have 2 digits in the ones place I know this is right cause Ms. Drye taught me to use my hundreds chart, but it took me forever and I know I can’t use a hundreds chart when I have to count to 9,876. I know that 36 has 3 tens and 6 ones and I know 28 has 2 tens and 8 ones, but I don’t know what my answer is

Will you help me solve this problem step by step?

36 +28 onestens

Do I need to regroup? YE S NO

36 +28 onestens So because I was able to regroup, doesn’t something have to go on top of the three? 1 46

Now let’s go back to the original problem 36 +28 145 36 +28 How many ones are there? 6 14 14 Why did that 1 just do that?

You guys are doing GREAT!! Keep up the good work. Just remember though. If you have more than 9 ones you can always regroup.

Hang In There!!! You have to regroup because you have more than 10 ones in the ONES column. You will need to group 10 ones and make a tens rod. Remember: If you have more than 9 ones. You will always be able to regroup
