May 5 th 1789 Estates-General King Louis XVI wanted to tax common people and spent his money foolishly. The common people wanted to discuss this so they held the first meeting in 175 years at Versailles.

June 17 th 1789 Third Estate formed National Assembly National Assembly passed laws and reforms in the name of the French people. Majority ruled and voted to remove the Monarchy.

July 14 th 1789 Following the 3 rd Estate French gained weapons in order to defend Paris from a rumored military attack. Citizens stormed a prison in Paris called, Bastille. The fall of Bastille became a symbolic act of the revolution.

August 4 th 1789 The newly formed National Assembly was now gaining power. The 1 st and 2 nd estates were worried about losing all their power.

October 1789 Parisian women rioted in France. The marched upon Versailles and killed several guards. They made the King and Queen return to Paris.

June 1791 Royal Family tried to flee France. A man stopped the king from leaving. The family was returned to Paris.

September 1791 The National Assembly formed a new Constitution which King Louis XVI approved. The Constitution created a new legislative body and the legislated assembly.

April 1792 Prussia and Austria wanted the French to bring King Louis XIV back to full power. The French were unhappy about this and declared war on Prussia.

September 21 st 1792 The Legislative Assembly put aside the Constitution of 1791. A new government took office on September 21 st, called the National Convention.

January 21 st 1793 The Jacobins and the new French government tried Louis XVI for treason. He was found guilty, and sentenced to death by the Convention.

July 1793 A Jacobin leader, Maximilien Robespierre gained power of France. Thence he changed the calendar. The new leaders closed churches throughout Paris. Robespierre threatened and intimidate citizens.

1793-1794 Many of the people who led the revolution received death sentences. Their crime was that they were considered less radical than Robespierre.

July 28 th 1794 The radical phase of the French Revolution ended. Society feared for their own safety and eventually turned on Robespierre. Robespierre was beheaded in the guillotine and the French Revolution ended.
