1.What is the headline? 2. What is the bi-line? 3. What do you notice is different about the layout of headline compared to a bi-line?

Step One: Read the event Please turn to page 228 in your textbook Read the description of Jay’s Treaty on page 228 My summary of Jay’s Treaty: The British refused to remove their troops from the Ohio River Valley and this almost led to war with America. President Washington negotiated Jay’s Treaty where the British agreed to pull their troops out of this territory The French were angry at this and said it violated their treaty with America The French navy began attacking American ships. 316 American ships were seized.

Step Two: Does this help or hurt your party? Federalists The Federalists are pro-Britain Jay’s Treaty keeps peace with Britain, so they would be happy about the treaty Jay’s Treaty angered the French and prompted the French to attack the Americans so the Federalists would use this as further reasons to hate the French Republicans The Republicans are pro-French Jay’s Treaty favors the British over the French, so they would be unhappy about the treaty Republicans would be embarrassed and defensive about the fact that the French were now attacking American ships.

Step Three: Creating a Headline and Bi-Line: Federalist Newspaper Taking the previous information, you can create the following headline for a Federalist newspaper. WASHINGTON MAKES PEACE! President Washington’s signing of Jay’s Treaty has kept our country from ruinous war with England. Angry French savages attack American ships at Sea. This bi line provides the context for the headline (why peace was saved) it also gives a one sentence summary of the historical context of the headline (Jay’s treaty kept peace with England but caused war with France)

Step Three: Creating a Headline and Bi-Line: Republican Newspaper Taking the previous information, you can create the following headline for a Republican newspaper. WASHINGTON BETRAYS FRENCH!
