Uh oh! Toby slept in for school and the lights don’t work in his bedroom, so he has to rush and get dressed in a room with lights. He knows that he has 3 blue shirts, 2 red shirts, 5 white shirts, and 2 green shirts hanging in the closet. If he “blindly” reaches into the closet, what is the least number of shirts Toby must grab to ensure he has gotten a white one? 8 shirts He could grab 3 blue + 2 red + 2 green and still not have a white shirt. But then the next shirt, the 8 th shirt, would have to be a white shirt.

Today, ice cream is selling for $1.50 per pint. There is a free bonus pint given for every 5 pints that you buy at Ralph’s. I spent $18.00 on ice cream today at Ralph’s. How many pints did I get? $1.50 x 5 = $7.50 Plus a bonus pint. $7.50 = 6 pints. So 12 pints will cost $15 ($7.50 x 2). $15 + $3 for two more pints = $18, for a total of 14 pints. Give it a shot – Do mental math, or write out your work!

You have two lengths of shadows. They can be compared with equivalent fractions. h4 ft -------- = --------- 24 ft 6 ft h = 16 ft Okay… here’s one more to try!
