Entrepreneurship Exposure Exercises In this set of exercises, each group of students will identify a business opportunity, investigate the market, and create a preliminary business model for a digitally-based sensor technology. Question: Is your proposed sensor technology a “disruptive” or “sustaining” innovation? Rationale: “Most graduates will become intrapreneurs, creating value through existing organizations. Thereby, the entrepreneurial mindset has value for every engineering grad.” ECE 3450 M. A. Jupina, VU, 2016

Three Part Exercise ECE 3450 M. A. Jupina, VU, 2016
4
What is an Opportunity? A ‘gap’ in the market A mismatch between supply & demand A more effective business model or process An unapplied new or existing technology ECE 3450 M. A. Jupina, VU, 2016

Procedure Watch the Entrepreneurial Mindset Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFoKmWfkDcU&feature=youtu.be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFoKmWfkDcU&feature=youtu.be Each student answers the pre-exercise survey questions. Each group brainstorms three or four sensor application ideas (basically, one idea per group member). Ex: RFID embedded in a VU Staff Parking Tag. Each group investigates the market for each idea and picks the idea with the best opportunity to succeed. Each group provides a design topology of the sensor system with enough details so that a design could actually be prototyped. ECE 3450 M. A. Jupina, VU, 2016

Procedure Continued Each group provides a simple business model (cost, profit, and revenue). Each group considers whether their proposed design is a disruptive innovation. Each group summarizes their work in a 5 - 10 minute presentation on their sensor design providing details on the design, the potential market, the business model, and whether their innovation is disruptive or sustaining. Each student answers the post-exercise survey questions. ECE 3450 M. A. Jupina, VU, 2016

Simple Business Model Gross Profit - a company's revenue minus its cost of goods sold Revenue - the amount of money that a company actually receives during a specific period ECE 3450 M. A. Jupina, VU, 2016
