T HE 9 L AWS OF E XPONENTS
2
L ET ’ S P LAY MATCH!!! Divide into two teams as directed by Ms. S Elect a team member to represent your team for each question (each member must be a representative at least once) Each representative will be allowed one life line while at the board. Team members must also answer the questions on a piece of A4 paper and pass it in by the end of the game. Have fun!

S O W HAT ARE THE 9 L AWS OF E XPONENTS ???
19
L AW 1: A DDING AND S UBTRACTING L IKE T ERMS Only terms with like exponents and bases can be added or subtracted E.g.
20
L AW 2: M ULTIPLICATION When multiplying powers that have the same base, keep the base and add the exponents. E.g.
21
L AW 3: D IVISION When dividing powers with the same base, keep the base and subtract the exponents. E.g.
22
L AW 4: P OWER OF A P OWER When you have a base with more than one exponent, the exponents are multiplied. E.g.
23
L AW 5: P OWER OF A P RODUCT When you have multiple bases for a single exponent, the exponent applies to ALL bases. E.g.
24
L AW 6: P OWER OF Q UOTIENT When you have a fraction with an exponent, the exponent applies to the numerator and the denominator of the fraction. E.g.
25
L AW 7: T HE Z ERO E XPONENT Any expression with a zero exponent is equal to 1. E.g.
26
L AW 8: N EGATIVE E XPONENTS You can not leave an answer with a negative exponent. If you have a negative exponent, take the reciprocal of the base and write the exponent as a positive. E.g.
27
L AW 9: F RACTIONAL E XPONENTS A base with a fraction for an exponent. We can write as. This will help us in simplifying a problem. The following is also true:
