Throughout this class we have discussed many elements of the field, including what it is, why to study it, its skill sets, the job market and career opportunities, research and professional credibility, and ethics codes. We delved into your academic and career goals. This week, we will add the essentials of making better decisions and we will pull all these topics together. After this course, you should have a good idea about the early childhood development field and how the skills and knowledge learned can be useful in your chosen career. Remember that the electives in your degree plan can be changed in upcoming terms!

After completing this unit, you should be able to:  Identify the elements of effective decision making  Create your finalized plan for the elective courses in your degree  Explore several Kaplan University resources

 DECISION MAKING  PROBLEM-SOLVING  MORE ON GOALS

What do you think the statement, “Whether my decision is good or bad depends on how I make it, not the outcome“ means? Do you agree? Can you think of an example?

Looking at the“pieces” (head and heart) of decision making on the previous slide, which do you think is the most important? Least important? Which piece do you tend to spend the most time on? Least time on?

 To be sure we reach a decision that makes sense and feels right, we need to understand that a good decision has six elements. These six elements are like the links in a chain: Your decision is only as strong as the weakest link.

If you like, share a problem that required you to make a decision and tell us what steps you used to make that decision. In retrospect, how could the steps described in your readings have helped you reach a decision or solve your problem more easily?

The terms problem-solving and decision making can sometimes be intertwined. Not always, but often when we have a decision to make, it’s because we have a problem to solve. What are some barriers to problem solving and how can they be overcome?

We’ve discussed decision-making and problem- solving. Let’s talk more about goals. What are the benefits of setting goals? What are some ways to achieve goals? What are some barriers to achieving goals and how can they be overcome? What is one of your biggest goals? How have the S.M.A.R.T. goals helped you?

Please make sure it is developmentally appropriate! You can store these ideas away for the future!

The final course in your Child Development Degree program will be IS299 Capstone Course. This course will be your opportunity to reflect upon your learning and how it culminates with the development of an electronic portfolio where you will showcase samples of your learning throughout this program. Therefore, you will want to carefully consider which assignments in the courses that you take may be a good example of your learning to include in your portfolio and be sure to save them in a secure place so you will be able to access them when you take the Capstone course. Create a file in which you save examples of your best work. Examples: your projects, your best DB posts, anything else you think shows really excellent work. You need to do this every term!

 Philosophy statement  Autobiography  Goals statement  Photos  Activities from your own classes  Brochure, workshop outline  Research paper  DB posts Can you think of any of your work in particular that you should save from this class? Resume References Work samples Lessons with reflections Project webs, charts Stories Family resources Child study/observations

It is a good idea to keep some of the resources that you found most valuable in each of your classes this term and in subsequent terms-articles, readings, etc. Put them in a folder by topic or by class. You may be able to use them again.
