The slope of a line refers to the steepness of a line or how far it leans over. We look at a line from left to right.

The slope of a line refers to the steepness of a line or how far it leans over. positive A line that goes up has a positive slope.

The slope of a line refers to the steepness of a line or how far it leans over. negative A line that goes down has a negative slope.

The slope of a line refers to the steepness of a line or how far it leans over. zero A horizontal line has a slope of zero.

The slope of a line refers to the steepness of a line or how far it leans over. undefined A vertical line has a slope that is undefined.

The slope of a line has a numerical value. We use a formula to find that number.

To use the formula you need two ordered pairs.

Find the slope of the line containing the points (2, 6) and (1, 3). A positive slope means this line goes up from left to right.

Find the slope of the line containing the points (5, 7) and (1, 9). A negative slope means this line goes down from left to right.

Find the slope of the line containing the points (2, 5) and (6, 5). Zero on top equals zero A zero slope means this line is horizontal.

Find the slope of the line containing the points (-2, 3) and (-2, 8). Zero on bottom equals undefined. (denominator) An undefined slope means this line is vertical.

To use the formula you can also use a table of values. table

Find the slope of the line containing the points in the table below. XY 3– 4 6– 10 9– 16 Choose 2 ordered pairs from the table. It doesn’t matter which 2 you choose. Let’s use these

( 3, – 4 ) and ( 6, –10 )

You can find the numerical value of the slope of a line by looking at the equation of the line. The equation must be in SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM. SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM.

y = mx + b m stands for slope b stands for y-intercept

y = mx + b y and x are just variables

y = mx + b Sometimes this is a minus sign if b is a negative number

y = mx + b As an abbreviation for Slope Intercept Form, we will say SIF.

Find the slope of the graph of the equation y = 4x + 7

y = mx + b Find the slope of the graph of the equation y = 4x + 7 m stands for slope. What number is in the place of m? m = 4 Let’s do another example.

y = mx + b Find the slope of the graph of the equation m stands for slope. What number is in the place of m?
