Audience

A text becomes rhetorical when an audience reads or hears it AND responds to it

Aristotle Believed speakers and hearers didn ’ t want to know truth or best option Rhetors and the audience are mutually responsible for their communication Rhetors and audience engage together to make meaning

Subject In writing something, you need to think about What you include Why you are writing or speaking Whom you are communicating to How - what kind of text you are composing

Choosing your subject #1 - Topic must be open – have two paths of interpretation, analysis, or argument Shakespeare was a famous late 16 th and early 17 th century English playwright. Shakespeare was a famous late 16 th and early 17 th century English playwright whose plays demonstrate remarkable insights into European history and politics.

Subject #2 – Capitalize on what your audience knows Make them curious about what they know Satisfy their curiosity by providing facts Audience curiosity: Did Shakespeare write those 34 plays? Satisfy curiosity: provide information about how a young man with a grammar school education could have written socially, historically, and politically rich plays

#3 Make your text believable Claim + support Thesis statement – main point you are asserting Create appropriate, effective points

Context Rhetoric take place in context (time, people, events, motivating forces) influences how a rhetor understands, analyzes the persona, the appeals, and subject matter Rhetoric has intention (aim, purpose) How you write or present ideas is your genre

No text is an island, all rhetoric has an occasion / context Allude to the surrounding context Analyzing cult of celebrity culture in American Society (a fashionable belief, idea, or attitude that influences people's lives) Who or what would you use as examples today? Topical Events (Time Bound) – currency fades O.J. Simpson, Watergate, Columbine, Florida voting mishap Recession – examples – personal experiences, observations Cultural Contexts – Ex: the country ’ s passion for heroes & obsession with wealth Use examples of best selling movies, rich and famous figures Or Local stories of fame (San Diego ’ s American idol)

Intention (aim, purpose) What you want to happen as a result of the text What you want the audience to believe or do Main point

Look at your writing – draw your essay Intention – what do you want audience to believe or do? (thesis) Context – what surrounding, SPECIFIC examples help your thesis intention context

Intention & context in my essay Personal Context – Mom pay cut – As a citizen have started taking on more responsibility at home, caring for siblings, yard work America is a land of opportunity, but only when individuals in society personally act for change Personal Opportunity – family sells belongings at the swap meet on weekends, applied for a job mending fences. Personal Friends lost job – they wanted to go back to school, joined military Cultural context – finding opportunity during a recession

How I see America 1. America has offered many citizens a sense of opportunity. 1. Define opportunity visually 2. Background – Hungary – see opportunity differently 3. Thesis America is a land of opportunity in its ability to provide a sense of security and justice. 2. Personal security is an idea that many in America take for granted. Ralph Waldo Emerson once stated that America is a land of opportunity and our history looks like an act of divine providence (God) due to this fortune that we have. Opportunity is the security to have the help of the police when they are called and should not be overlooked. Domestic Violence 3. Financial Security is not a statement one would associate with America at current. bank closures due to overdraft keeping money in the sock drawer 4. Conc. Emerson stated America is the land of opportunity, but it is an opportunity that must be earned and valued by its citizens. Citizens role in personal security Citizens role in financial security Through individual awareness more opportunity grows
