alert Define: to warn about a danger. Example: Wolves howl to alert other wolves when danger is nearby. Ask: How would you alert someone to talk quietly?

competition Define: the act of trying to win or gain something such as in a contest. Example: Joe won the competition because he was the fastest runner. Ask: What kind of competition have you participated in?

environment Define: natural surroundings. Example: The polar bear lives in a cold and snowy environment. Ask: Can you describe a whale’s environment?

excellent Define: very good. Example: Lily’s excellent artwork won first place in the art show. Ask: Can you tell about a time when something you did was excellent?

prefer Define: to like better. Example: Simon and his friends prefer walking to riding their bikes. Ask: What kind of transportation do you prefer?

protection Define: the act of keeping safe; something used to keep safe. Example: The skunk’s scent provides protection from its enemies. Ask: Can you tell what you use for protection on sunny days?

related Define: any person who belongs to the same family; aunt, brother, mother, etc. Example: Josh and Jen are related because they are both members of the same family. Ask: Can you name two animals who are related ?

shelter Define: something that protects such as a house. Example: Our tent was a dry and safe shelter during the storm. Ask: What is another kind of shelter people use?
