EGG Female butterfly lays egg on a leaf A little caterpillar grows inside the eggs An egg is white or light green.

LARVA Another name for larva is caterpillar. It is very hungry. It munches leaves and grows bigger. When the larva is big enough, it stops eating and settles on a tiny leaf. This caterpillar is crawling on a leaf.

PUPA A full grown caterpillar spins a case around itself. The larva is now called a chrysalis or pupa. Inside the chrysalis the body changes in many ways until it becomes an adult. This pupa is hanging from a thin peace of silk.

ADULT BUTTERFLY The newly formed butterfly emerges through the chrysalis. The adult butterfly sits for a while, until it is ready to fly. It tries out its wings. One day it may lay eggs of its own, and new caterpillars start to grow. This butterfly is flying over a leaf. It may lay some eggs.
