3 Lesson 22 – The Jewish Plot 22:1-2 The Jews convene at the home of Caiaphas to plot Jesus’ death v. 1 Mt 26:3 Most likely, it was late Tuesday evening Their plan was to be executed in such a way as to not turn the people against them v. 2

4 Lesson 22 – Judas’ Offer 22:3-6 Judas’ offer solved the Jews’ “dilemma” He agreed to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver vv. 4-5 cp. Mt 26:15 Possibly because of Jesus’ rebuke Jn 12:6 The “plan” was set in motion…looking for an opportunity “apart from the people” v. 6

5 Lesson 22 – The “Meals” 22:7-38 The Passover vv. 7-13 Jesus gave His disciples specific instructions re: the Passover vv. 7-12 They found everything just as Jesus said it would be v. 13

6 Lesson 22 – The “Meals” 22:7-38 The Lord’s Supper vv. 14-20 While reclining at the Passover table, Jesus “instituted” a new memorial feast…one to be eaten in His memory vv. 14-15 Unleavened bread & unfermented fruit of the vine represent His body, blood vv. 16-20

7 Lesson 22 – The “Meals” 22:7-38 The Lord’s Supper vv. 14-20 He ordained it to be a “communion” with Him in His new kingdom vv. 16, 18 cp. 1 Cor 10:16 He gave thanks for each emblem vv. 17, 19-20 These “procedures” were “delivered to” & “received by” N.T. saints 1 Cor 11:23

8 Lesson 22 – The “Meals” 22:7-38 After Supper, they leave the upper room and go to the Mt. of Olives Mt 26:30 Jesus announces the betrayal vv. 21-22 He gave the “sign” as to which disciple… Judas was identified and departed Jn 13:26-27, 30

9 Lesson 22 – The “Meals” 22:7-38 The disciples once again argue about “personal greatness” v. 24 Jesus teaches about & displays “true greatness” vv. 25-27 Jn 13:4-17 Faithful servants will be rewarded vv. 28-30

10 Lesson 22 – The “Meals” 22:7-38 Jesus warns Peter about Satan vv. 31-34 He “desires to sift Peter as wheat” v. 31 Jesus is praying for him and what He wants Peter to do after his “return” v. 32 Peter is sure of his “faithfulness” v. 33 Jesus predicts his denials v. 34

11 Lesson 22 – The “Meals” 22:7-38 Jesus prepares His disciples vv. 35-38 Unlike the “Limited Commission” …they should now take what they need vv. 35-36 cp. Lk 9 Jesus is soon to be “numbered with the transgressors” v. 37 The disciples’ work will soon change focus

12 Lesson 22 – In The Garden 22:39-53 Jesus, as was “His custom,” comes to Gethsemane to pray v. 39 Mt 26:36 He takes 3 disciples on further and tells them to “watch & pray” v. 40 In agony, Jesus prays re: the “cup He must drink” vv. 41-44 cp. Heb 5:6-7

13 Lesson 22 – In The Garden 22:39-53 The 3 disciples sleep from sorrow…Jesus wants them to watch vv. 45-46 Mt 26:40-41 Judas brings a multitude to arrest Jesus… uses the “pre-arranged sign” v. 47 Judas knew where to find Jesus Jn 18:1-3 Jesus is dismayed over Judas’ kiss v. 48

14 Lesson 22 – In The Garden 22:39-53 The disciples defend Jesus v. 49-50 Jesus refuses this…heals Malchus v. 51 cp. Jn 18:10 Jesus chides the Jews for the manner in which they have come to Him vv. 52-53

15 Lesson 22 – Before The Jews 22:54-71 After fleeing & seeing Jesus led away, Peter decides to follow “from afar” vv. 54-62 Compare to Jesus’ instructions Mt 4:18-19 Good Questions To Consider … Can we follow Jesus “from afar?” What results if one tries? vv. 54b-60

16 Lesson 22 – Before The Jews 22:54-71 After fleeing & seeing Jesus led away, Peter decides to follow “from afar” vv. 54-62 How crushed Peter must have felt when he denied Jesus and the Lord turned and looked at him when the rooster crowed vv. 61-62

17 Lesson 22 – Before The Jews 22:54-71 Jesus was mocked & beaten…treated with contempt by the Jews vv. 63-65 Early Friday morning, the Sanhedrin assembled to pass judgment on Him v. 66 He was asked if He was the Christ v. 67 Jesus’ answer wouldn’t matter vv. 68-69

18 Lesson 22 – Before The Jews 22:54-71 Jesus was asked point blank… “Are You the Son of God?” v. 70a He replies, “Yes, I am” v. 70b The Jews are convinced of the “blasphemy” and see no further need of “testimony” v. 71 He will go before the Romans next
