Standards-Based Report Cards

What is a Standards-Based Report Card? It reports student progress toward meeting state and district standards in areas of content and performance.

Who Benefits from the Standards-Based Report Card? Students and Parents/Guardians – can be more aware of what is expected. Teachers – can get a better understanding of what each child should know and be able to do at each grade level.

A Standards-Based Report Card Helps the Parents!! It provides parents with a more detailed outline of the expectations in each of the major academic areas. It breaks down the TEKS so parents can see the specific area, or areas, in which their child could use extra practice.

How does the Standards-Based Report Card Compare to the Letter Grade System? Letter grades measure how well students do in comparison to their classmates. The standards- based report card measures how well an individual student is doing in relation to the grade level standards, not the work of other students. This gives parents a better understanding of their child’s strengths and weaknesses and encourages all students to do their best.

Why Do We Need to Change? The traditional system was based on many factors including work habits, attitude and other variables. A standards-based report card gives specific information concerning a student’s level of proficiency on a given standard. The focus is on what students actually learn.

What Will the Report Card Look Like? The report card will look differently than the traditional one that has depended on a single letter grade for each subject. We want to communicate to families what it is we expect students to know, be able to do and understand.

Standards-Based Grading Key Terms Assessment Performance Levels Standard

Assessment The ongoing process of gathering data or giving feedback about a student’s performance in order to determine a student’s strengths and weaknesses, improve instruction, and document student progress.

Performance Levels Levels will be used on the Standards-Based Report Card to indicate a student’s level of understanding and performance, based on the standards that are set for the entire year.

Standard A statement that identifies what students should know and be able to do.

Additional Forms of Reporting to Parents Will Include: Parent-Teacher Conferences Daily Class Work Progress Reports Local and Standardized Assessment Reports
