4. ’ Using Apostrophes There are two uses for apostrophes:
1. to form contractions
did + not = didn’t
2. to show possession or ownership

5. Rule 1
The most common use of the apostrophe is to form the possessive case of nouns.
Example: The boy’s boat means-
The boat belongs to the boy.

6. Rule 2
The possessive case of singular nouns which do not end in “s” is formed by adding the apostrophe and an “s” directly to the word.
Noun Possessive
The coat of the boy The boy’s coat
The face of the man The man’s face
The pen of the woman The woman’s pen

7. Rule 3
The possessive case of plural nouns or nouns which end is “s” is formed by adding just the apostrophe at the end of the word. Noun Possessive The windows of the bus The bus’ windows The hats of the girls The girls’ hats The bats of the boys The boys’ bats

The possessive case of plural nouns which do not end in “s” is formed by adding an apostrophe and an “s” directly to the noun.

Here’s an exception to the rule about forming possessives: Possessive pronouns do not use apostrophes.

14. Using Apostrophes Many people confuse its and it’s.
Remember that its, which means belonging to it, is like other possessive pronouns—it doesn’t take an apostrophe!
The contraction it’s means it is. The apostrophe tells you that the letter i is missing.
