2 Possession  Many times apostrophes are used to make nouns possessive  Singular nouns or nouns that do not end in s just add an apostrophes  Boy-----Boy’s Book-----Book’s  Plural nouns or nouns that have an s just add an apostrophe  Boys-----Boys’ Books-----Books’

3 Plural  There are only three reasons that an apostrophe makes a word plural  Letters-----I made all A’s and B’s.  Numbers-----I made two 54’s last week.  Single Words----There are 7 I’s in your paper.

4 Complex Apostrophes  If the two people or things that own something are combined with “and” only one apostrophe is needed  Tom and Jane’s car is green.  If the two people or things that own something are combined with “or” then apostrophes are needed on both  Tom’s or Jane’s car is green.

5 Reminders  Use an apostrophe to show omissions in a year.  ’99 (1999) ’10 (2010)  Apostrophes only make three things plural  If a word has an apostrophe on it the item that it “owns” must come right behind it  Cat’s ball

6 Reminders  In contractions, the apostrophe always comes after the “n”  Don’t-----Won’t-----Dosen’t  When dealing with compound nouns that have hyphens (mother-in-law) the apostrophe comes at the end  Mother-in-law’s
