Be Humbled by the Truth

Genesis  There are three types of filaments that create and support the innings of a cell  Microtubules  Actin Filaments  Intermediate Filaments  …But wait, there’s more!!!

Microtubules  Microtubules of a cytoskeleton are straight hollow cylinders made up of tubulin monomers. microtubule

 The microtubules are the support of the cytoskeleton and also help in the transport of certain protein molecules

Actin Filaments  AKA microfilaments.  The finest of the three  Forms a band just beneath the plasma membrane

 Generates locomotion in cells  Ex: white blood cells This is what you should be looking at

 ALSO, they interact with myosin filaments to provide the force of muscular contractions… …Whoa!!

Intermediate Filaments  Several Types:  Keratins  Nuclear Lamina  Neurofilaments  Vimentins  They provide a supporting framework within the cell

Roles of Cytoskeleton  Maintains cell shape  Protects the cell  Enables some cell motion (using structures such as flagella and cilia)  Plays important roles in intra-cellular transport (the movement of vesicles and organelles)  Plays important role in eukaryotic cellular division

 Remember! The cytoskeleton is both a muscle and a skeleton, and is responsible for:  Cell movement  Cytokinesis  Organization of the organelles within cell  The cytoskeleton acts as a "track" on which cells can move organelles, chromosomes and other things.

Motility  Spontaneous Motion  Product of evolution  The cytoskeleton is very critical to cell motility  The cytoskeleton system is a secondary source for cell motility

The End… …or is it?  Get your pencils out because we have a miniscule POP QUIZ to give you!!!!
