2 BTEC National Sport © Hodder Education 2010 Roles & Responsibilities of a Sports Coach The roles of a sports coach are many and varied, and include teacher, trainer, motivator and instructor. Coaches can have a direct influence on the lives of their performers in terms of their social, psychological, personal and health development. Sports Coaching

3 BTEC National Sport © Hodder Education 2010 Conduct & Skills of a Sports Coach Most coaches in the UK work to a code of conduct or practice that is established to set the parameters of acceptable behaviour and effective coaching. The essential skills toolkit of a successful sports coach includes: Sports Coaching –management –communication –teaching –organisation.

4 BTEC National Sport © Hodder Education 2010 Techniques Used by Coaches Coaches can make good use of reflective diaries in order to improve their coaching performance. Performance profiles can be used for performers and coaches alike. Coaches are expected to make interventions to improve performance, having identified areas for development. Coaches can condition games to facilitate the teaching of a specific skill or tactic. Sports Coaching

5 BTEC National Sport © Hodder Education 2010 Planning a Coaching Session Planning is the first stage of coaching and requires the gathering of information relating to performers, facilities and resources. Effective coaches use session planners to show what they have planned for a session and to maintain a record. Health and safety is the most important consideration in the planning and delivery of coaching sessions. Contingency plans are back-up plans that can be used in the event of an unforeseen circumstance that threatens the safety or quality of the coaching session. Sports Coaching
