5
Overview Returned to India Became a voice for India against Britain Emphasized non-violence and what he called “the force of truth” eventually led to India’s emancipation from British rule.
6
Spirituality Rooted in devout individual spirituality. Gandhi combined several notions from within the Indian religious tradition – ahimsa, karma yoga, satyagraha – to create a social movement of non-violent resistance and non- cooperation in the face of social prejudice and opposition in his native India.
7
Spirituality Ahisma: ideal that injury to another creature not only injured the other, but oneself. This notion encompasses a sense of active compassion. Karma yoga: emphasized work as a means to the goal of enlightenment. Instead of focusing on the intellect, faith or psycho-physical experimentation, karma yoga provides a path to spiritual goals through ordinary, everyday experience. Satyagraha: truthfastness, holding to the truth, power of truth, or truth- force
8
Spirituality The revolutionary goal – which Gandhi thought was so simple children could be taught the principle – was to solve a conflict so that all parties to the dispute would have their position honoured.
9
Spiritual Movement The movement starts with the individual. Gandhi’s legacy to his people is he awakened the values and beliefs they had. They valued freedom and as a basis of Hinduism, all beings are free and not to be harmed. Oppression was against the core value of Hinduism. As a result, Gandhi was able to rally such strong support for the movement.
