RESULTS OF THE REGIONAL PRODUCTS SURVEY Aric Bickel – IOOSA/CeNCOOS

Overview  Reasons for the survey and our methodologies  A discussion of the results  Limitations  General Observations  Comments from the RA directors  A brief look at the short listed categories  Open floor for questions and discussion

Reason for the survey  A snap shot of the products RAs are developing and offering  A tool for looking at what are common/complementary products between the RAs  An idea of products that may serve as examples to build off of for common national or super regional products  A chance to provide some feedback on how easily/clearly the products the RAs are creating can be found/used/understood  Future potential

Methodology  Survey of all 11 RA websites  The creation of a categorized spreadsheet with the results  Conversations with all of the RA directors to get their feedback and additions to the spreadsheet

Discussion of the Results  Limitations  “Under representation” of RAs that have large integrated products (usually portals)  Timeframe  Exclusion of partner products  Limited time with the directors (and little input sought from the data managers/developers)

The Spreadsheet

General Observations  Heavy in marine operations  A lot of Cross-Cutting  Data Portals  User need focused  Variance between RAs  Discoverability

Director Comments  Product that integrates all the data streams they have  Focus on products that span as many regions as possible  Integrated water quality and climatology product seems to be among stakeholder needs(2).  Rip current prediction product (i.e. something that strongly appeals to a number of user groups)  Keep clearly in mind the end users and develop something that all of the RAs can develop a common outreach plan for

Director Comments  Common severe weather/extreme event product  A ubiquitous issue for the RAs  Support for trajectories, inundation, and climatology products (with some detractors)  Private sector competition  Whether through this initiative or not, there is a need for federal assistance in developing inundation products  Possible legal complications with inundation products
