2 Haverford High School Course Selection Night For current 9 th, 10 th and 11 th grade students February 13, 2014

3 Student Support Counselors: Through advisory assignments, counselors follow students for four years Administrators: The grade-level principal follows the students Advisors: Homeroom advisors follow the students

4 Levels For the 13-14 school year, Levels 1 (Honors and AP), 2 (College Prep), and 3 (Career Track) will be offered in math, science, english and social studies Levels will be determined by parent/student selection, with teacher recommendations

5 Scheduling Procedure Access course requesting on-lineon-line –This can be done from home or in the school library –Access is through the HHS Counseling Department webpage –Requests will be verified in advisories, comparing them with course selection sheets –Students cannot pick semesters for courses~ courses will be balanced based upon master schedule

6 English/Social Studies English 10/World Cultures –Choose the same level of each course as classes will integrate content, materials and assessments American History/American Literature ~ 11th Grade –Choose the appropriate level of each course American Government ~ 12th Grade –A graduation requirement –There are now three levels: AP Level, Level 1 and Unleveled 12 th grade English –There are now five levels: 2 AP Levels, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3

7 Math Requirements REQUIRED CORE MATH COURSES: –All students must earn 4 math credits to fulfill graduation requirements These courses will be part of the CPM sequence –Class of 2017 (current 9 th grade) and beyond must pass Algebra Keystone Exam for graduation

9 Science Sequence HHS Class of 2015 (present 11 th grade) Required: 4 Courses/4 Credits Inquiry into the Physical Setting Chemistry Biology Elective Science Suggestion – Take the next course(s) in the sequence.

10 Science Sequence HHS Class of 2016 and 2017 (present 10 th grade and 9 th grade) Required: 4 Courses/4 Credits Inquiry into the Physical Setting Biology (Class of 2017 must pass Biology Keystone) Chemistry Science Elective Suggestion – Take the next course in the sequence.

11 Possible Changes Seminar and Reading Courses – Students are expected to pass the Keystone exams by the end of their junior year If students are not successful on Keystone exams they may be placed in mandatory English or math classes When students are scheduled into these classes they are scheduled in lieu of other English or math courses The school will place students in these classes as a result of Keystone exam scores

12 Electives The Course Selection Guide is filled with electives in many subject areas Please check prerequisites before scheduling electives Requesting an elective does not guarantee that the student will receive the elective

13 Dual Enrollment/DCCC Who is eligible? Second semester seniors “in good standing with required courses/graduation credits” Students who wish to try out college courses to determine whether or not this is the right path for them, and/or wish to earn college credits during the last semester of their high school career Students may be responsible for tuition, materials and fees

14 Dual Enrollment/DCCC Students are approved by the DCCC Admissions Office Students submit college application and enrichment form Students undergo placement testing (English, reading, mathematics) Students who are considering this option should attempt to determine what courses they would like at DCCC and schedule their high school classes around them Students cannot schedule classes at DCCC while they are scheduled for classes at Haverford High School

15 Delaware County Technical School Option for 11 th and 12 th grade students Blocks 1 and 2 every day at DCTS and blocks 3 and 4 at HHS Over 15 different courses of study –Choose Vo-Tech A.M. when requesting courses

16 Please Note Scheduling a minimum of 6.5 credits is required for each student.
