2
The Three Primary Names of God
3
EL Gibbor El Gibbor is one of the strong names of God in the OT El Gibbor means Mighty (Elohim is Mighty or Mighty God) Introduced in Deut 10:17. How does the author describe Yahweh. Best known in Isa 9:6. As a messianic prophecy.
4
EL Gibbor Read Psalm 24:8. David describes the LORD as having exceptional physical strength and agility. El Gibbor was the name that the Israelites called on in Battle El Gibbor was the name that the Israelites called on when weak or discouraged
5
EL Gibbor Why do you think that Jehovah was referred to as being Mighty in so many of the OT references? Referenced against false pagan gods Israel needed a strong God to take possession of the land Israel needed a strong God to overcome constant warfare Israel needed a strong God that had to be dealt with regarding disobedience
6
El Gibbor How should our understanding of El Gibbor affect our ability to deal with problems? Take a minute and think of one problem you have failed to release to the Mighty God for whatever reason (excuse).
7
Abir Yahweh was also described as Abir God of Jacob. Read Gen 49:24. Read Isa 1:24. Read Psalm 132:2-5. What is unique about the name Abir among the strong names of God? Think about one area of your life where you need to apply the Abir strength of God
8
What do you know about rock? Describe the attributes of rock Strong (is a force to be reckoned with) Hard (can be used to drive other things) Useful (building, reservoirs) Impenetrable (we can not go through it) Protective (it can serve as shelter, fortress, shade) Jehovah is also a Rock that we can count upon
9
El Gibbor Jehovah is also referred to as Rock “Tsur” Read the Song of Moses in Deut 32:4; 15;18;30;31. Why do you think Moses depended upon his Rock?
10
Tsur What aspects of God’s strength are emphasized by the name Tsur? How should this name of God make a difference in a believer’s life in the world today? What is one situation in your life that you are facing where you need to turn to God as Tsur ?
11
How can we apply what we have learned today? El Gibbor
12
God cannot protect what we will not give him to protect. What are things that need El Gibbor’s protection? Our families Our job Our homes Our reputations Our finances
13
Application To what extent will we go to protect what we think is ours? Why do we fight so hard for this? Because we are material by nature (possessions) Because we are selfish by nature and want (lust) after things, people and position.
14
Application God can not work HIS way in our lives while we work out our ways. –To many cooks spoil the broth. –Let go and let God...... We have to first surrender in ceasing self- centered activity. The second step is to fight according to divine principles. When we fail to do either of the above, we actually interfer with what God wants to do for us
15
Application Protection begins with a relationship, not a rabbit’s foot. El Gibbor is not a good-luck charm. God’s mercy has to fall within his will. Read James 4:14-15. God’s mercy has to be within what God has promised to protect. God’s mercy is dependent upon the believer’s walk with Jehovah.
16
Application There are ways in which we can keep ourselves close to El Gibbor so that He can protect us. Some of these are: Having a good knowledge of HIS Word - so that we can interpret and apply it to our lives Being close to HIM keeps us from being unnecessarily exposed to harm (being a good citizen, sexual purity, healthy lifestyle, honest with our business dealings)
