What are Civil Rights? Citizens’ personal liberties (freedoms) guaranteed by law (such as voting rights and equal treatment)

The racial climate in the U.S. began changing after WWII. Groups like the NAACP challenged segregation laws NAACP – National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

An Important Case In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled on the Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, KS Segregation in schools is unconstitutional - “separate but equal is not ok” Brown v Board of Education becomes the basis for many advances in civil rights

Leaders & Strategies Many different groups formed the Civil Rights movement during the 1950s-1960s. Many different leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. also started These groups had different strategies, but the same goal - to achieve Civil Rights.

Nonviolent Protest Many of these groups used the idea of nonviolent protest Nonviolent protest – a peaceful way of protesting against an unjust law Nonviolent protesters do not resist even when attacked by opponents

Strategies Other strategies include: sit-ins, boycotts, marches, and Freedom Rides.

Passing the Laws A march on Washington in 1963 drew attention to important civil rights bills MLK gave his “I have a Dream” speech Civil Rights Act of 1964 Voting Rights Act of 1965

Differing Ideas Some groups preferred a more radical approach Nation of Islam Black nationalism & black power Malcolm X
