Test Taking Tips Carefully read the instructions on the cover of the test booklet Read the directions for each test carefully Read each question carefully Directions will change from one test question to the next. Know what you are being asked to do.
3
Test Taking Tips Pace yourself – don’t spend too much time on a single question If you do not know the answer, try to eliminate some of the possible choices. Select from the remaining choices Pay attention to the announcement of five minutes remaining on each test.
4
Test Taking Tips Answer the easy questions first, then go back and answer the more difficult ones. Remember to use POE, then choose an answer. ANSWER EVERY QUESTION You are not penalized for guessing. Select a letter of the day! If you are just making random guesses, mark all answers you have absolutely no clue about with the same letter.
5
English Test Tips Read the directions for each question carefully! Pay close attention to any underlined portion Examine each answer choice and determine how it differs from the others. For example, if the comma is moved in the answer choices, you are being tested on commas.
6
English Test Tips Read all answer choices before you select one. Don’t be afraid of choosing “No Change” if you feel it is correct If you are replacing an underlined portion, reread the sentence using your selected answer. Read each passage from the beginning and answer the question each time you reach an underlined section. DO NOT just read the underlined parts.
7
Reading Test Tips The Reading test has four passages: Prose Fiction (short stories and novels) Social Sciences (history, economics, psychology, political sciences, and anthropology) Humanities (art, music, architecture, and dance) Natural Sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, and physical sciences)
8
Reading Test Tips If one type of reading is easy for you, do that section first. Save the hardest sections for last in case you start to run out of time and have to guess anyway. If you decide to read the passages out of order, make sure you mark the correct answer spot on your answer document!
9
Final Advice Get plenty of sleep before the test Eat something for breakfast Bring your own snack. You will not be allowed to go to the snack store during the break. Remember, you have prepared for this test all year with the DOL, class work, and Global Scholar. Be confident in your abilities!
