Animal Classification
2
Background: Scientists look at living things and identify their characteristics. They group together living things that have similar features. This act of grouping things by using a set of rules is called classification. Scientists classify for many reasons. Classifying living things makes it easier to find and share information about them.
3
Directions When scientists discover a new living thing, classification can show how the new living thing relates to others that are already classified. Scientific names include the genus and species name. In this activity, you will look at pictures of animals and use a dichotomous key to find out their scientific names. Use the key to find the scientific name of each animal shown on the projector. You have five minutes to find the scientific name for each animal before the slide changes. Good Luck!
