Unit 2: The scale of a map and the measuring of distance A. What is a scale? Purpose: To fit large areas onto small sheets of paper A ratio between a distance on the map and the same real distance on the ground surface Scale Next

Unit 2: The scale of a map and the measuring of distance D. How do we find distance with a line scale? Method 1: Step 1: Mark two points on the edge of a piece of paper which correspond to the distance between two places. Step 2: Put the piece of paper along the line scale to find the actual distance between these two points. Method 2: Step 1: Open the dividers to the distance between two certain points. Step 2: Compare the distance with the line scale. Next

Unit 2: The scale of a map and the measuring of distance Terms to learn: Scale - a ratio between a distance shown on the map to the same real distance on the ground surface Representative fraction - a scale in the form of a ratio Statement scale - a scale written in a short sentence or phrase Line or linear scale - a scale in the form of a line with divisions to show distance End
