1
Naming Acids and Bases
2
Naming Acids Acid- contains one or more hydrogen atoms and produces hydrogen ions (H + ) when dissolved in water. General formula H n X, where n is the number of hydrogen, and X is the anion
3
Rules When anion ends in ide - the acid begins with hydro-. The stem of the anion has the suffix ic and is followed by the word acid. Ex: HCl - X = chlorine Hydrochloric acid
4
When anion ends in ite - the stem of the anion has the suffix ous and is followed by the word acid. Ex: H 2 (SO 3 ) X = sulfite Sulfurous acid
5
When anion ends in ate - the stem of the anion has the suffix ic and is followed by the word acid. Ex: H(NO 3 ) X = nitrate Nitric acid
6
Writing Formulas for Acids Use the same rules, but in reverse! Just make sure they balance~ Try these: –Carbonic acid –Hydrobromic acid –Nitrous acid
7
Bases Produces hydroxide ions (OH - )when dissolved in water Follows the same rules for naming ionic compounds.
