LITERACY-BASED DISTRICT-WIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Aiken County Public School District January 15, 2016 LEADERS IN LITERACY CONFERENCE Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Literacy Centers (Stations): Planning for Purposeful Practice LEADERS IN LITERACY CONFERENCE By Reading Coaches: Tabatha Hughes-Millbrook El., thughes@acpsd.net Carolyn Williams – North Augusta El., cwilliams383@acpsd.net Holly Vaughn- Clearwater El., hvaughn@acpsd.net Kim Entzminger – East Aiken School of the Arts, kentzminger@acpsd.net

Activator Use yellow post it notes to create a list of things you believe should be included in a literacy center/station. Place your thoughts on the chart nearest you. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Norms Use technology appropriately. Respect others' opinions. Be an active participant. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Outcomes I understand that purposeful and authentic literacy stations must include reading, writing, and/or research. I will develop and implement purposeful, authentic reading, writing, and research literacy stations within my classroom. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Essential Question How should literacy stations be created in order to be purposeful and authentic? Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Agenda As learners today, this is how your learning is going to look. We will: define authentic literacy stations describe traits of effective classrooms provide examples of "purposeful" and "authentic" perform a "Sort": Stations vs. Centers examine the fundamental elements and characteristcs of literacy stations watch a short videos of upper elementary literacy stations discuss the benefits, implementation, types, formative assessment, and final thoughts. close with a gallery walk and share time Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

What is a Literacy Station? A small area in a classroom where students work in small groups or individually to actively explore literacy tasks while the teacher provides small group reading instruction. (Ford & Opitz, 2002) Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Research into High Progress Literacy Classrooms: Research by Allington & Pressley identified the “Six T’s” found in High Progress Literacy Classrooms (see pink handout). Time Texts Teach Talk Tasks Tests Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

How do literacy stations relate to the 6 T's? Research by Allington & Pressley identified the “Six T’s” found in High Progress Literacy Classrooms (see pink handout). Time -Students spend time working on authentic reading & writing. Texts - Students read books at their independent level. Teach - Through mini-lessons teacher demonstrate strategies used by good readers. Talk - Teachers and students spend time in authentic conversation. Tasks - Students spend time on substantive tasks, allows for student choice. Tests - Rubrics are often used, students are evaluated on progress made. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Literacy Stations Are Purposeful Thoughtful Planned Intentional-Why am I doing this? What do I want to accomplish? Data Driven-Based on Formative Assessments: Running records (within last 2 weeks) Book logs Classroom assessments Writing journals Anecdotal records from conferences Portfolios Reading Interest Surveys Reading Conferences Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Literacy Stations Are Authentic Real Text including; Pictures/Photographs Magazines-Scholastic, Time for Kids, Weekly Reader, Zoo Books, Social Studies Weekly, National Geographic for Kids Newspapers Books Articles Online sources Genuinely produce tasks based on YOUR data– real reading, writing, and research. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Stations/Centers (Diller,D., 2003, Literacy Work Stations, Making Centers Work) Authentic Literacy StationsTraditional Literacy Centers Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Stations/Centers (Diller,D., 2003, Literacy Work Stations, Making Centers Work) Authentic Literacy Stations Materials are placed in the literacy station for independent work AFTER they are taught and used for instruction. Station set up remains the same all year, but materials are changed based on student reading levels, strategies taught, and topics studied. All students go to stations multiple times throughout the week. The meaningful, independent work is an integral part of the child’s instruction. All materials are differentiated based on students’ needs. Teachers meet with small groups during literacy stations. Traditional Literacy Centers New materials placed in the center without having been used in teaching. The teacher may or may not have shown the students how to use the materials. Centers changed weekly with units of study. Used by students when they finish their work as something fun, extra, or motivational. All students completed the same activities with little differentiation. When the teacher met with small group, all groups completed the same task. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Fundamental Elements of Literacy Stations Tied to a Text at the Student’s Independent Level Embedded Skills and Strategies Student Interaction Student Engagement (choice) Differentiated Based on Need(s) Extension of Thinking-Rigor Extension of Content Relevant Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Characteristics of Authentic Literacy Stations Organized Motivating and Engaging Consistent Structure Aligned with the Curriculum Based on Formative Assessment Built in Accountability System Engagement with Reading, Writing, and/or Research Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

After a turn and talk time, we will choose 3 people to share out. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Benefits of Literacy Work Stations Meaningful Literacy Activities Differentiated Opportunities for Independent Practice Engaging Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Implementation Process 1.Literacy Stations should be based on the gradual release of responsibility: 1.Modeling the Task 2.Guided Practice 3.Ultimately - Independence Within the Station. 2.Begin with a 5-10 minute mini lesson to teach stations: 1.Make it explicit 2.Beginning of the year “how to’s” 3.Introduce the station 4.Use a mini lesson when adding something new 5.Review station activities 6.Use anchor charts in stations 7.Use I Can Lists…. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Types of Literacy Stations This list is NOT all inclusive, but is intended to provide some ideas to help you get started! (see yellow handout) ABC Literacy Station Classroom Library Station Big Book Literacy Station Poetry Literacy Station Writing Station Drama Station Computer Station Buddy Reading Station Creation Station Science/Social Studies/Math Station Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

How do I document Literacy Station Work? Anecdotal Notes and/or observations Student Work Samples Take Picture of students (Diller, 2003) Use a work station share time or wrap up to collect information/discussion. Have a space for completed work or work in progress to review as needed: Students can mark a page in a journal with a sticky note for quick checks. Make a schedule – review the station work with students during conferences so you are reviewing work for each child at least once per week. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Final Thoughts on Developing Authentic Literacy Stations Focus on purpose and practice Always link literacy stations to teaching Start Small Use Novel Ideas Simplify Stations Gather all materials Direct Activities Remember Reading, Writing, and/or Research Consider splitting up literacy stations in your grade level PLC's to collaboratively develop stations. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Outcomes I understand that purposeful and authentic literacy stations must include reading, writing, and/or research. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Think About With what you know now, were your views on authentic literacy stations validated, enhanced or changed? Why or why not? What are some ways that you can use what you currently have in your classroom to engage students in reading, writing, and/or research? Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society

Wrap Up activity Take your green sticky notes and add any additional thoughts to improve the effectiveness of literacy stations to your poster. Take a few minutes to take a gallery walk and see what your colleagues have posted. Then return to your seat. Purpose: The mission of the Aiken County Public School District is to create in students a passion for learning and achievement that will serve them as they compete and contribute in a global society
