Speed Dating- Civil War Style Standard: IB HOA Topic 8- The US Civil War: Union vs. Confederate: strengths and weaknesses; economic resources; roles and significance of leaders during Civil War; role of Lincoln; significance military battles/campaign. Goals: Explain the bias and effectiveness of significant Civil War leaders and generals. Assignment: Find two scholarly articles that describe your leader from a historical bias. OPVLC both. Thursday and Friday, you will “speed date” with your classmates to discuss and share evidence as well as the historiography of your findings. Monday and Tuesday, we will research in class. Be prepared to answer all questions associated with the standard to your “date” and Ms. Xiques. Rubric: IB Analysis

3. Directions Each “date” will last 10 minutes. Follow the rotation on the list provided. You should be able to answer the questions on the handout for every leader by the end of class on Friday. Monday you will have a quiz with multiple choice and short answer questions. Turn in your own work (OPVLC, articles, and theses) to me at the end of the class on Friday. This should be fun! Get into character.

4. Help… Search engines like JSTOR and Galileo are your best friends. If you cannot find the author and there is no date for the most recent update if you using a webpage, it is not a reliable source. Make sure you know the background information on the source to validate the bias of the article. Ex: The Los Angeles Times generally leans left and The Washington Post leans right. Google Scholar is ten times better than Google Search and use + article or Scholarly Journal I will be available Tuesday after school for help and during class. Please take advantage of this!!!
