Research lifecycle – data infused Image source: Bournemouth University http://blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk/research/tag/rkeo/ Data Find data Plan to manage data Collect, store, analyse data Publish / share data Cite data
3
Storage Secure – from loss or unauthorised access Durable and easily accessible (to authorised users) – file formats and hardware Organised and documented – metadata to assist discovery and reuse 2
4
Policies to watch Funding bodies and publishers – many have requirements to share data Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research 3
5
Intellectual property Who owns the rights to new data collected or created? – especially important for projects with multiple partner organisations, or – when funder policy differs to host institution policy Reuse of data from other sources must be done ethically and legally – check the licence! 4
6
Ethics, consent and sensitive data Sensitive data (e.g. human health, ecological) – may need to be confidentialised, and/or – only publish a metadata record, with conditional access to data itself (i.e. restricted to bona fide researchers) The consent gained from participants will affect what can be done with data later … – so consider potential data sharing and re-use scenarios well before data is collected or acquired 5 http://ands.org.au/datamanagement/sensitivedata.htmlhttp://ands.org.au/guides/sensitivedata.html Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH)

Licensing Open data is data that can be freely used, re-used and redistributed by anyone - subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and sharealike. 6 http://opendatahandbook.org/guide/en/what-is-open-datahttp://opendatahandbook.org/guide/en/what-is-open-data/
8
Licensing No Licence = No Reuse Permitted Researchers getting contacted for permission to use their data 7
9
Publishing data Deposit data in an appropriate repository or storage facility – institutional – discipline-specific Assign a persistent identifier – DOI Publish the metadata record in 8
