1 Social Cooking Project Evaluation Proposal Dr. Haider Ali & Dr. Andrew Lindridge Open University

2 BHF proposal to FSA  Was there a change in the awareness and behaviour of the volunteer cooks?  What was the extent of the change in the quantities of salt used during the project and at the end?  What were congregations’ reaction to the food cooked with reduced salt recipes?

3  What were the pre and post campaign levels of knowledge of salt consumption?  Have the shopping, cooking and eating habits of the wider community changed to reduce their salt intake following the intervention?

4  Have these changes continued to be sustained after the end of the intervention?  What has the project added to the knowledge base about salt consumption in Indian communities?

5 Constraints  Small population sizes for some of the groups –Only qualitative methods possible in some instances  Need to translate some questionnaires and results –Adds substantially to cost  Limited timeframe for asking questions face- to-face in places of worship –Research instruments need to be short  Geographic spread of respondents –Telephone interviewing essential in some areas –Adds to cost

6 Main Survey Groups  Cooking volunteers (small numbers)  Congregation members (large numbers)  Religious / community leaders (small numbers) –Ecclesiastical and lay administrative  London, Birmingham & Bradford  Hindu & Sikh  Male/Female ?

7 Cooking Volunteers  Two focus groups –One Hindu & one Sikh  Location –London and another city  Timing –After volunteers have been trained by dieticians

8 Congregation - Quantitative Survey  Questionnaire –1 side of A4 (translated into minority language on reverse)  Locations –London, Bradford, Leicester  Religions –One Sikh & One Hindu places of worship in each city  Target respondents –100 in each location  Timing –Phase One - Before campaign start (with request for phone number) –Phase Two - After campaign end with respondents being called back –At the Phase Two stage some open-ended questions will be asked as well

9 Questionnaire Survey Questions  Demographic (descriptive reasons) –Age / Gender / Town  Name & telephone (quality control)  Awareness of intervention campaign elements  Feedback on food  Impact on behaviour

10 Congregation Members - Depth  Face-to-face interviews  Semi-structured research instrument  15 Hindu and 15 Sikh  Two different cities  At places-of-worship  After the campaign has been delivered

11 Community / Religious Leaders  15 telephone interviews  Semi-structured research instrument  Interviews undertaken in whichever language is preferred by interviewee
