BHF proposal to FSA Was there a change in the awareness and behaviour of the volunteer cooks? What was the extent of the change in the quantities of salt used during the project and at the end? What were congregations’ reaction to the food cooked with reduced salt recipes?

What were the pre and post campaign levels of knowledge of salt consumption? Have the shopping, cooking and eating habits of the wider community changed to reduce their salt intake following the intervention?

Have these changes continued to be sustained after the end of the intervention? What has the project added to the knowledge base about salt consumption in Indian communities?

Constraints Small population sizes for some of the groups –Only qualitative methods possible in some instances Need to translate some questionnaires and results –Adds substantially to cost Limited timeframe for asking questions face- to-face in places of worship –Research instruments need to be short Geographic spread of respondents –Telephone interviewing essential in some areas –Adds to cost

Cooking Volunteers Two focus groups –One Hindu & one Sikh Location –London and another city Timing –After volunteers have been trained by dieticians

Congregation - Quantitative Survey Questionnaire –1 side of A4 (translated into minority language on reverse) Locations –London, Bradford, Leicester Religions –One Sikh & One Hindu places of worship in each city Target respondents –100 in each location Timing –Phase One - Before campaign start (with request for phone number) –Phase Two - After campaign end with respondents being called back –At the Phase Two stage some open-ended questions will be asked as well
