What is CAPA? Virtual, patient-driven, national arthritis advocacy organization CAPA is about: education, awareness, collaboration & advocacy Partners: Patient organizations Researchers, clinicians, allied health professionals Professional associations NGO’s Government Industry

CAPA Believes The first expert in arthritis is the person living with arthritis. People with arthritis have the right and responsibility to be included in the policy, health care and research decisions related to their health and quality of life.

Structure Not for profit Steering Committee – members from across Canada, different types of arthritis President – Linda Wilhelm, VPs – me, Laurie Proulx Meet monthly on teleconference, annually in person Consultants: admin, accounting

Goals Support the priorities of the Arthritis Alliance of Canada Maintain regional representation Represent the arthritis patient voice, expand patient involvement Aim to educate, collaborate, advocate

Activities Represent the patient voice Sit on Committees Communications: website, facebook, twitter, newsletter Patient input submissions (CADTH, Health Canada, provincial) Attend meetings, present Position papers CAPA-led projects Research advocates & collaborators Guided by our annual strategic plan

Example Project: Pregnancy & Parenting with Arthritis Feel there is a gap for resources in this area Currently surveying our membership: Planning for children, having children of different ages Will develop resources based on what informational needs are Presenting a poster at this meeting

Collaboration: Easy hits Share information – newsletter, Facebook, twitter account (@CAPA_Arthritis) Grant reviews – providing patient reviewers Dissemination of information & resources to your clients – e.g. Arthritis Patient Charter, TEAM arthritis information modules Participation in our surveys

Collaboration: Organizational Create resources and tools for your clients based on feedback and input from your membership, for joint dissemination Webinars/videos created together to address gaps identified for/by patients

Collaboration: Individual members Do you need input for a research project? Do you need a patient’s perspective/collaboration on a research or training project? Do you need to disseminate information?

Challenge: Is there a project we could work on over this next year together that we could present at next year’s pre-course or even submit an abstract to the CRA meeting?
