WRITING WORKSHOP WRITING TO IMPROVE OUR SCORES ON THE GLOBAL REGENTS

Ms. Pampalone Goal of class to help you acquire the basic skills needed to be successful on Regents exams in History. Everyone in this class must participate. Be on time. Accept criticism and welcome strategies and writing suggestions.

Aim: To become familiar with the basic skills to help improve our reading and writing skills. Do Now: Think and write down 5 factors you need to consider in order to improve your writing.

WRITE Who are you writing for? Know your audience. Review whether your piece should be formal or informal. On regents exams, all writing is formal. Include reason for writing and make sure you address the task(s). Text type. Know the difference between a letter, speech, memo, etc. Edit your work. Reread what you have written.

Classwork: Choose one political figure from the list below: Martin Luther King, Christopher Columbus, John Locke, Abraham Lincoln, Mohandas Gandhi. Your audience: A group of English teachers who are quite unfamiliar with historical figures. Should your piece be formal or informal? Your task: Discuss one of the political figures above. How did the above figure contribute to change? You are writing a short paragraph. Revise your work. Reread what you write.
