Chapter21 States of Matter

What is Matter? Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.

What are the 3 States of Matter?3 States of Matter There are 3 states of matter Solid Liquid and Gas.

The properties of Solids Liquids and Gases.

What is Matter made of? All matter is made up of tiny particles that may be molecules, atoms or ions. In a solid the molecules are tightly packed. In a liquid the molecules are flowing over each other. In a Gas the molecules have separated completely from each other

Changes of State Matter will change its state depending on how much it is heated or cooled.

Definitions The melting point of a solid is the temperature at which both the solid and liquid states of a substance exist together. Evaporation is the changing of a liquid to a gas or vapor. The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which evaporation begins to occur throughout the liquid. Condensation is the changing of a gas to a liquid.

Textbook Chapter21-States of Matter A1.Space, mass. A2.Solid, liquid, gas. A3Liquid. A4.Molecules, atoms, ions. A5.Molecule. A6.Fixed, vibrate, move. A7.Heated. A8.Melting, evaporation. A9.Condensation, freezing. A10.Evaporation, throughout.

B1.Solid,liquid,gas. (a)Ice to water; candle wax turning to liquid; butter turning to liquid. (b)Water to ice; liquid candle wax hardening; liquid lard hardening. (c)Water in a puddle 'drying up'; water boiling; perfume in an open bottle. B2. SeeExperiment 43.2, p.293,and Experiment43.3,p.293. B3.(a)The molecules get enough energy to roll and slide over each other. (b)The molecules get enough energy to break away from each other completely. B4.(a)The molecules lose energy and can now only slide and roll over each other. (b)The molecules lose energy and can now only vibrate in fixed positions. B5.C,melting. B6. Gas:has no definite shape. It takes the shape of the container it is in. Solid :has a definite shape.
