* Review: What are the properties of water? * Water is adhesive: It has the ability to stick onto things. This allows for capillary action- water’s ability to travel up small tubes.
6
* Water is cohesive: It has the ability to stick to itself. This creates surface tension- which causes water to form droplets and allows insects and leaves to rest on the surface of a body of water.
8
* Water is the universal solvent * This is because many substances dissolve in it. * Homogeneous mixtures: mixture has a uniform composition throughout. A solution is another word for homogeneous mixture. * Heterogeneous mixtures: mixture where the components remain distinct
9
* Water has a very high specific heat capacity- the amount of heat per unit mass required to raise its temperature by one degree Celsius. * It also has a high heat of vaporization- it can take a lot of heat without its temperature rising much. * Water’s hydrogen bonds allow its solid form (ice) to float on its liquid form. Ice is less dense than liquid water.
10
* Take out your water lab handout and begin with part 1. Set up Part 1. * You will need to complete parts 2 and 3 while you monitor part 1.
