How to Write a Travelogue
Travelogues are the story of your visit to a place. They can be organized a number of ways: Chronological narrative: Tell the story of your trip, from start to finish. (On our first day we stayed in a quaint hostel on Paris' infamous Left Bank...) Organized by topic: Use a theme that holds it all together. (Restaurants of Europe; Canadian hotels; the best places to visit in _______) Organized by town/city/etc.: A review of a number of locations to visit, with a similar focus for each. (In Paris stay at...., eat at... and be sure to see.... In Rome stay at...., eat at..., etc. ) Or any other organizational strategy to fit your particular trip.

Travel Guide A travel guide is an information brochure about a particular location. The aim of the guide is twofold: To attract visitors by showing what a place has to offer, and To help visitors to the location easily find the products and services they will need when they travel.

How to Write a Travel Guide
Choose a location. (One focused location is best.) Keep in mind that you are writing for a VISITOR, not a local! Your audience is someone who knows nothing, and your guide must answer all their questions. Cover some or all of the topics below. There might be even more! Map/location: How to get there. City/Town guides: Restaurants, places to stay, etc. Attractions: Natural/Tourist/Museums/Beaches/ Skiing/Golf/etc.? Events: Seasonal/cultural/etc. with dates.

Postcards Postcards usually have a picture of the location that the sender is visiting, and on the back there is the following information: The name and location of the receiver. The stamp. A small place to write something. …but what goes into that space?
7
How to Write a Postcard Of course, anything at all can go into that space. However, there is an art to postcard writing! Postcards should contain the following information: Information about the journey to get to the location. A general comment (usually the weather there). One amusing anecdote from the trip so far.
8
Assignment Choose a location. This could be a location related to your portfolio topic! Brainstorm for 5 minutes on the location. Think about things that might interest visitors! Complete TWO of the following: A postcard from a visitor to the location you chose. A guide to the location you chose. A travelogue of your visit to the location, organized however you would like.
