Chemical Properties Sullivan Barber, Brendon Adams, Jeshawn Howard, Jasyiah Smith 7 th Period Science

Physical Properties  Physical properties tell the physical features of something  A example of physical properties are a table being solid or water being a liquid

Melting Point  Melting point means the point is when something is in a state of a solid and it gets hot enough to melt or turn into a liquid  The point a pure substance melts isn't changed under the same conditions

Boiling Point  The boiling point is the point a liquid starts to form bubbles and they come to the top or its called boiling  The boiling point for pure water is 212˚F or 100˚C

Density  Density is the difference between the mass of and an object and its volume  Denser objects have a high mass  How dense an object is will stay the same no matter how much of it you have  For example: Steel is always more dense than aluminum

Color  IT IS USED TO IDETIFY A SUBSTANCE, ALONG WITH OTHER PROPERTIES.  BY ITS SELF IT IS NOT SIGNIFICANT IDENTIFIER OF A SUBSTANCE  ABSRENCE OF COLORIS ALSO A PHYSICAL PROPERTY

Chemical Properties  Chemical Properties are used to identify a substance  Chemical Reactions can only be recognize when a chemical reaction take place or doesn’t

Reacting With Oxygen  The ability of a substance to burn is a chemical property.  It involves a substance reacting quckily oxygen to produce and heat.  Reacting with oxygen slowly occurs when iron rusts or apples turn brown.

Reacting To Acids  The ability of a substance to react with an acid is a chemical property  Some metals react with various acids to form compounds  Bases react with acids to form water and neutralize the acid.

Physical Changes  These changes don’t happen chemically  The only thing that changes is it physical properties

Change In State Or Matter  When a substance changes it state, its composition stays the same  When a substance goes directly from a solid to a gas or a gas to a solid, this is called sublimation

Change in size or shape  When a substance changes in shape or size, its composition stays the same

 When a substance changes, it takes on a new chemical and physical properties Chemical Changes

Color Change  When a substance changes color chemical composition of the substance may have changed.  It is possible to have a colored changed.(for example, adding food coloring to water).

Temperature Change  When a substance is combined with another substance there may be an increase or decrease in temperature.(for example, when wood burns to ash and gases, the temperature increase.  It is possible to have a temperature change without a chemical change(for example, warming of the water in the pond).

Formation of a precipitate  When two substances are put together, they form a solid substance  The solid substance is called a precipitate and shows that a chemical change has occurred

Formation of gas  When a solid or liquid are put together, they cause gas air bubbles  The formation of gas bubbles means that a chemical change has taken place
