2 Growth and Development Infancy: birth to walking; physical, thinking, & social skills develop Childhood: after infancy and before sexual maturity; more able to care for oneself; develop complex physical tasks; mental and social growth Adolescence: puberty to adulthood; sexual characteristics develop; height Adulthood: when body completes growth and sexual maturity; mental and social development continues Later Adulthood: aging begins at 30; rate increases after 65; systems tend to decrease.

3 Health Nutrients are used for energy and to maintain and build new body tissues (6 essential nutrients) Proteins Carbohydrates Fats Vitamins Minerals Water

4 Nutrients Proteins: build tissues for growth and repair; 20% of diet Carbohydrates: most important energy source; 40- 50% of diet Fats: essential for energy; 10-15% of diet Vitamins and Minerals: regulate body growth and development; build body tissues; needed in small amounts; found in food Toxic if you get to much Water: essential for life; regulates body temp; transports essential nutrients and minerals through body; helps get rid of waste products; should drink 2.5 liters (8 glasses) a day

5 Exercise is essential for a healthy lifestyle Inhale and Exhale more air exercising muscles of respiratory system Brings in extra Oxygen Heart becomes stronger the more it is used Skeletal system grows stronger Sweat flushes skin pores Reduces symptoms of depression

6 Health Problems Drug abuse & addiction (tobacco, alcohol, other drugs) Nicotine-drug in tobacco, some farmers use to kill insects Alcohol: Side effects: weight gain, liver disease, heart or respiratory failure Eating disorders Ex. Anorexia Nervosa: not getting enough nutrients Bones and muscles are broken down Side effects: Loss of hair on head, growth of fine hair on body, dizziness, fatigue, kidney failure, liver failure

7 Prevent and Treat Diseases Microorganisms: organisms that cause sickness Bacteria: Pneumonia, ear infections, strep throat; treated with antibiotics Viruses: Stomach flu, chicken pox, colds; can treat symptoms

8 Prevent and Treat Diseases Spread by food, air, water, contact with insects or other animals, and person to person contact Some diseases are inherited at birth and can not be spread Cystic Fibrosis-chronic lung, pancreas, liver and intestinal disease Huntington’s disease-neurological disorder, uncoordinated, jerky body movements, diminished mental abilities Some diseases develop later in life due to environment and lifestyle (heart disease, cancer, respiratory disorders)
