RI ™ © DrO 2012 In the beginning… u The first Rotary Club was organized in Chicago 23 Feb 1905, by Paul P. Harris. Rotary Founder Paul Harris u The club, starting with four members, met in rotation at the offices of the members - thus the name Rotary. u There are currently more than 34,550 clubs with over 1.22 million members.

RI ™ © DrO 2012 Service Above Self u Rotary soon recognized that fellowship alone would not keep a group together— there needed to be a purpose. u First project was a public washroom in downtown Chicago. Then, a horse to replace a rural physician’s only transportation to service Juliet patients. u Rotary became the world’s first “service club”.

RI ™ © DrO 2012 Object of Rotary The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: u First. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; u Second. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his or her occupation as an opportunity to serve society; u Third. The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his or her personal, business, and community life; u Fourth. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

RI ™ © DrO 2012 Club Service— Operating the club successfully. Vocational Service— Promoting the “ideal of service” throughout their business or professional world. Community Service— Participating in all activities that make the community a better place in which to live. International Service— Encouraging and fostering the advancement of understanding and goodwill among people of the world. Youth Service— Empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs, Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange.

All board positions, except President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President, are two year terms that change July 1.

RI ™ © DrO 2012 Your Obligations in Rotary Participation u To be a Rotarian you must give of your time and talents, when physically possible: –in community work –participate on a minimum of two club committees. –in social functions –in club and district activities. PLAN TO ATTEND DISTRICT AND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES

RI ™ © DrO 2012 Your Obligations in Rotary eClub Attendance u Weekly online attendance is a benefit of Rotary. 100% attendance is expected. u At least 30 minutes of contiguous online time per week via audio and/or videoconferencing or online reading and interaction. u You can maintain your attendance levels by making up at another Rotary Club within 14 days of a missed meeting, attending a District event, or an RI Convention.
