Home school is the education of children at the home, by the parents or hired tutors, instead of in a formal education setting. Home school is a legal option for parents to for educate their children. In some places, like New York State, a curriculum needs to be approved by the school district; this is legally required for children who are going to be home schooled. The parent/guardian must submit an Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP) to the school district indicating the educational plan and goals for the child during the academic school year.

In general education, a curriculum is established, which consists of courses and their content, offered at a school. The curriculum is set according to grade level with goals of expected student achievement. The general education curriculum is presented with standard teaching methods, as a guide for educators, without additional supports. General education is the opposite of special education.

Bilingual education involves teaching most content areas in two different languages, English and a another language, such as Spanish. The use of the languages vary according to the program model. There are several different types of bilingual education program models: – Transitional Bilingual Education Uses child’s native language – Dual Language Immersion Helps native and non-native English speakers become bilingual – Developmental Develops literacy in native language, then transfers skills to English language.

An inclusion classroom is a general education classroom in which students with special needs are placed for education instruction. It is the least restrictive environment (LRE) offering additional, appropriate supports for students with special needs. Peers often act as helpers to make sure that the special needs student is met with total acceptance. The student with special needs may be assigned an educational assistant or one-to-one paraprofessional. The special needs student in an inclusion classroom has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Resource rooms are smaller classrooms where a special education program can be delivered to students with a disability. Instruction is offered by a teacher, individually or in a small group setting addressing students’ needs in a specific area for a portion of the day. Student’s receiving resource room services have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). This form of support is also referred to as Withdrawal or Pull Out. Resource room services allows students to participate in an inclusion education setting.

In collaborative teaching two educators share the responsibility for planning, teaching, and monitoring the success of all students in a classroom. Collaborative teaching is a active process that educators constantly reconfigure to fit their instructional plans and the learning needs of their students. Three approaches to implement collaborative teaching: – Team Teaching: Educators plan and present subject content to all students together – Supportive Learning Activities: Activities to reinforce, enrich, and enhance learning for students – Complementary Instruction: One educator teaches content material and the other teaches skills for understanding of material.

A self-contained classroom is a classroom in which the students have similar academic requirements or special needs. All students in a self-contained classroom have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The students may vary in grade level, spanning more than one grade level: – A classroom may consist of third and fourth grade students. – The students in third and fourth grade may be performing on a first and second grade level. – The students may all be on the same grade level, but all have a learning disability.

Special education is the education of students with special needs, which addresses the individual differences and needs of the students. Special education involves planned teaching methods, techniques, procedures, and interventions identified in an individualized education plan (IEP). Common special needs are: – learning disabilities – emotional /behavioral disorders – physical disabilities – developmental disabilities
