The Teaching and Learning Carousel 20 th January 2010 Priti, Ceri, Amer, Louise & Richard

Before we begin! When you come in please sit in groups of four/five on a table where YOU think staff from that table are from a complete different subject area to your own! For example staff from the Maths department should sit on a table where there is a member of the Art/Drama department - All will be revealed later!

Today’s Focus To provide staff with a wide range of starters to test and use in lessons! To exchange ideas on using starters for different lessons! Hope you all enjoy these and PS some of these ideas may not/cannot be used depending on the subject you teach!

Bidding Wars In groups answer the following question! What are the 10 most common surnames in the UK? (you do not need them in order)

How it works Each group decides on their 10 Each group then has to make a bid for how many of the ten they can give correctly. The highest bid goes first and only gives the same number of answers as their bid. To win they must get all of their answers correct. The teacher only gives the number of correct responses and not which ones were correct. If they do not give all correct responses then the group with the next lowest bid goes next and it continues until you get a winning group.

Answers What are the 10 most common surnames in the UK? 1. Smith (729,862) 2. Jones (578,261) 3. Taylor (458,268) 4. Willam (411,385) 5. Brown (380, 443) 6. Davies (316,982) * - 108,041 Davis 7. Evans (231,844) 8. Wilson (227, 652) 9. Thomas (220,228) 10. Roberts (219, 694)

Starter Activity – Guess The Word/Concept/Image  Pupils will be able to ask relevant questions to help them to solve a problem Who are the people? What do they all have in common? Task  Ask questions that can be responded to with either “Yes” or “No” to guess the hidden person/word/concept  Each Yes answer unveils part of the puzzle

Guess the person (1/3) YES NO

Guess the person (2/3) YES NO

Guess the person (3/3) YES NO

Starter Two: Stand up sit down One person names a topic. All pupils write a key word to do with the topic on a piece of paper. The person who chose the topic has 30 seconds to name as many key words to do with the topic as they can. If the word the pupil has written down is said they have to sit down. The aim for the topic chooser is to get everyone to sit down. The aim for the pupils writing down a word is to out fox the topic chooser with a relevant but obscure word. Score by counting up the number of pupils who sit down. (10 mins depending on class size/ number of topics)

Your Task As we all will be going to our departments/faculties a good way to close this wonderful session is through collaborative efforts. Everyone hopefully has been placed in a group with staff from different subject specialism's. What we would like you to do is to come with different possible starters that people can use in different subjects based on your experiences on what works well with your lessons/classes

Thank You! Hope you all enjoyed the session, keep up WITH the excellent WORK!
