III- The Eastern Front A) June 1941- Germany violates its treaty and invades Russia

1) Captured half of the country and kill or capture millions of Russians 2)Germany Army advance is stopped by the horrific Russian winter

B) Russian surround the Nazi Army at the city of Stalingrad. 1) Over one million troops fight and die in the block by block war to win the city. 2) 91,000 starving Nazi’s surrender to the Russian Army.

C) 1944- The Russian Army (30 million strong) advances westward towards Germany

IV- America’s Plan A) America splits it Armed forces in two 1) The first part will fight the Nazi’s in Europe 2) The second part will fight the Japanese in the Pacific

B) America sends most of the Army and Air Force to England to train and get ready. 1) England and the US begin a non-stop bombing of Germany’s cities

2) Saturation bombing- non-stop bombing of every available target 3) Wanted to destroy Nazi factories, railroads, and cities

C- Tuskegee Airman 1) 334 th Fighter Pursuit Squadren- Segregated African American unit of fighter pilots. “Red Tails” 2) Protected American bombers from German fighters 3) Never lost a bomber to enemy fire

V- Invasion of Europe A) Have to get the American and English armies onto mainland Europe

B) European supreme commander, General Dwight Eisenhower designs Operation Overlord- the invasion of Europe

C) D-Day 1) June 6, 1944- 21 American divisions and 26 English, Canadian, and Polish divisions attack Nazi occupied France 2) 150,000 troops attack a 50 mile stretch of French beaches in Normandy

3) After intense fighting on the beaches of Normandy, the Allies gain a foot hold on the main land. a)10,000 Allied casualties

D) Within a month, America moves a million troops and tanks from England to France 1) By August of 1944 (2 months after D Day) the Allies push the Nazi’s out of France

2) Hitler orders that Paris be burned to the ground. Luckily, his men disobeyed the order

E) Germany is now in a un-winnable position. –Russia attacking from the east –America attacking from west

1) By April 1945 (10 months after D-Day) the American Army is 50 miles outside of a ruined Berlin 2) The Air Force had reduced Berlin to rubble

3) America allows the Russians to invade Berlin and capture the city (and lose the men taking it). 4) Before he can be captured alive, Hitler and the German high command commit suicide in their underground bunkers

F) With Hitler dead, Germany surrenders unconditionally. 1) VE Day-May 7, 1945 2) VE- Victory in Europe

G) FDR did not see VE Day. 1) He died in office weeks earlier (natural causes) 2) Vice President Harry Truman is tasked with accomplishing VJ Day

VI- The Holocaust A) After the war, the Allies learned the true extent of the Final Solution 1) Final Solution- The official Nazi plan to purify Germany by committing genocide on the Jewish race in Europe 2) Genocide- attempt to exterminate a race or ethnic group

B) European Jews the Nazi’s could find were arrested before and during the war 1) These Jews were sent to Concentration /Death camps where they were worked to death or exterminated

2) By 1945, six million Jews had been systematically killed by the Nazis 3) Every Nazi captured with connections to the genocide were tried and hung. 4) Israeli agents hunted down the Nazis that escaped
